Before The Archangel of Genoa, Raymond Saracco Jr. began writing a deeply personal account inspired by his years in the fire service.
Through the Smoke: A Firefighter’s Journey takes readers inside the world of firefighting, public safety, sacrifice, and service. More than a collection of emergency calls, it is a reflection on the people behind the badge—the moments that test them, the losses they carry, the brotherhood that keeps them going, and the quiet strength it takes to keep showing up.
Written with honesty and respect for the profession, Through the Smoke offers a look at the fire service from the inside, honoring the firefighters, families, and communities shaped by the job.
"The tones dropped just after midnight.
Within seconds, the station that had been silent was alive with movement. Boots hit the floor. Bunker pants were pulled on in practiced motion. Coffee cups were left half full on the table. The details of the call didn't matter yet. Someone needed help, and that was enough.
As the engine rolled out of the bay, the familiar glow of red emergency lights reflected off the storefront windows and sleeping neighborhoods we passed. Most people never see this side of the night. They sleep peacefully while firefighters, police officers, dispatchers, and paramedics prepare for whatever waits at the other end of the radio.
Sometimes it was a fire.
Sometimes it was a medical emergency.
Sometimes it was a tragedy that would stay with us long after the report was written.
The public often sees the flashing lights and the heroics. What they don't see are the quiet moments that follow. The drive back to the station. The empty chair at the kitchen table. The conversations that never leave the firehouse. The memories carried home and tucked away so we can answer the next call.
Firefighting is not defined by a single act of bravery. It is built on thousands of ordinary moments when ordinary people choose to serve others before themselves.
That is the story of the fire service.
And this is my journey through the smoke."
